“This opportunity has been great in preparing me for day-to-day nursing in a medical office environment. After an application is submitted, it is reviewed to ensure the internship aligns with the scholar’s course of study.  The Golden LEAF Rural Internship Initiative Program Manager then reviews the application, including the unofficial transcript and essay questions, to evaluate the scholar’s professional interests and commitment to a rural community. Interns are announced in March 2026.

The program requires scholars to identify their own internship sites. To assist with this, the Golden LEAF Foundation provides a Site Directory—a list of businesses, nonprofits, and government entities that have expressed interest in hosting a scholar. Students are responsible for reaching out to sites from this list or finding a new one on their own.

No, the Golden LEAF Rural Internship Initiative does not provide housing or transportation stipends. Scholars are responsible for securing their own housing and arranging transportation for the duration of the internship. The program’s design, which encourages students to work in their home communities, is intended to minimize these needs.

No, all internships must be completed in person at a site physically located in a qualifying rural North Carolina county. This is a core requirement of the initiative, which aims to provide hands-on, local work experiences and strengthen connections within the community.

The program is open to first-year students who have not yet declared a major. The alignment with a “course of study” is defined as your intended major. The program may request additional information regarding courses you have taken or are registered to take to confirm your alignment with a particular field.

Yes. Internship sites are expected to work with the scholar to craft a job description that provides a meaningful experience. The project or role should be an extension of the content the intern has learned in their college courses and should use direct action verbs to describe specific tasks. The program emphasizes that this is not a traditional hourly job, but a professional and educational experience.

Internship sites must be located in a qualifying rural North Carolina county. Internships may be completed at an entity with multiple locations, provided the student completes the internship at a site located in an eligible county.
